What is Reflexology

A complementary treatment working with the feet (and sometimes hands)

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Some practitioners may also include work on points found in the face and ears. Reflexology works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

A reflexology treatment is usually performed in a comfortable chair or couch. If it is to be performed on the feet, the client will be asked to remove footwear and socks but other forms of reflexology require no removal of clothing.

The practitioner will make a visual and tactile examination of the area to be worked before beginning the precise reflexology massage movements. The particular types of movements involved require the application of an appropriate pressure using the thumb and fingers.

Reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures. The therapist’s expert touch will help you relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of wellbeing.

Since completing my Reflexology Diploma, I have undertaken further reflexology training in:

Cancer & Palliative Care – Jubilee College

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) – with Sally Kay

RLD is a reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet and/or hands. The aim is to cause an effect on the lymphatic system in the body. It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by the highly regarded Sally Kay, whilst working in Cancer Care.

“I suffered greatly from debilitating tension headaches which was the result of my desk-based job. Regardless of many desk assessments and preventative measures the company took, my shoulders and neck would eventually lock up. I found that a selection of regular therapeutic treatment of the shoulders and neck by Hazel has prevented the muscle tension building up and as a result, the occurrence of these headaches has significantly reduced, to the point where I can enjoy work/life in equal measure”
“You (Hazel) have the innate ability to thoroughly investigate muscle soreness and tension; often identifying areas that need working on that I didn’t even realise needed work. You individually tailor an effective treatment that successfully addresses my muscle pain and leaves me feeling less stressed.”
“If I was to put it simply, I’d say I come to you because you investigate all my lumpy, ouchy bits and iron them out nicely so that I can go about my day feeling human again.”
“I usually come for a massage for general relaxation and well-being. It helps to relieve stress and also allows me to have some time to myself away from a busy schedule. But also to relieve tension/aches and pains in my back and shoulders which in turn improves sleep.”
“In the past, a massage was a treat that I only got around to organising every few years. I first came for treatment as a way to relax and switch off after work, as I was finding work stressful and was left feeling anxious and physically tense. By having a regular massage, it helps both with easing away the physical tensions but also just as importantly supports my mental well-being too, as I can allow myself to properly switch off. “
